Figma, XD, and Sketch on Windows: What Actually Pastes?
By Khushi Yadav
Cross-tool teams still talk as if copy-paste is a common language. On Windows it is barely a dialect. Figma speaks PNG, SVG, and its own objects. Adobe XD is in maintenance mode and was never a great Windows clipboard citizen. Sketch does not run on Windows. Windows history, for its part, stores text, HTML, and bitmap, 25 items, 4 MB, wiped on restart except pins.
This comparison is the reality, not the keynote.
Platform facts first
| App | Windows app? | 2026 product status | Native objects on the Windows clipboard? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Figma | Yes (desktop + web) | Active | Figma objects inside Figma; PNG/SVG when asked |
| Adobe XD | Yes (desktop) | Maintenance mode since 2023; no new features | Limited; treat as export-first |
| Sketch | No (macOS only) | Active on Mac | Not available on a Windows PC |
Coursera and Sketch’s own docs agree: Sketch is macOS-only. Sketch can import .fig files on the Mac app (not the Mac App Store build). That import does not help a Windows laptop.
Adobe community threads and Adobe’s own help updates described XD entering maintenance mode in 2023: security and bug fixes, no feature roadmap. Teams still opening .xd files in 2026 should plan an export path, not a clipboard path.
What actually survives a hop
Figma’s official interchange advice is blunt: SVG is lossless; use it. Copy assets between design tools. Marker and pattern elements may be dropped.
Practical matrix for Windows:
| From → To | Vector via clipboard | Reliable method |
|---|---|---|
| Figma → Figma | Yes (Ctrl+C) | Same file or Figma’s own copy |
| Figma → PS / Office / Slack | No (unless SVG accepted) | Copy as PNG or export |
| Figma → Illustrator | Sometimes SVG | Copy as SVG or export SVG |
| Illustrator → Figma | Version-dependent | SVG export or Copy as SVG; AI PDF/AICB prefs matter |
| XD → Figma | Do not trust | Export SVG/PNG or a converter plugin; not Ctrl+C |
| Sketch → Figma | Not on Windows | On a Mac: open .sketch in Figma or export SVG |
| Figma → Sketch | Not on Windows | On a Mac: File > Open .fig in Sketch |
| Any → Win+V | Bitmap/text only | Small PNG or SVG-as-text; 4 MB cap |
Vectors “rarely survive” means: layers, auto layout, components, prototype links, and Boolean ops do not become a Windows clipboard format other tools share. A path *might* survive as SVG markup. A design system will not.
Figma on Windows (the one that is real)
Use Figma as the hub if the team is mixed-OS.
Documented commands: Copy and paste objects.
- Ctrl+Shift+C Copy as PNG (2×)
- Copy as SVG from Copy/Paste as
- Incoming bitmaps become fills; 4096 px resize
- Browser GIFs flatten
- Desktop versus web clipboard access differs — dedicated guide
Windows history can hold the PNG or the SVG text if they are small. It cannot hold the component.
Adobe XD on Windows (maintenance)
XD still opens and still copies on machines that have it. Do not build a 2026 workflow on that copy.
For each artboard that must live in Figma or PS:
- Export SVG (simple vectors) and PNG (everything else).
- Import or Place the file. Do not Ctrl+C / Ctrl+V across apps and call it a migration.
- Rebuild components and prototypes in the destination. Clipboard will not.
Third-party converters (for example community plugins that ingest .xd) exist because native paste failed as a migration strategy. They are not Adobe-supported replacements for a file-based handoff. Quality varies; always check layers after import.
If XD refuses to launch on a new Windows 11 box, that is the maintenance-mode future arriving. Export while a licensed machine still runs it.
Sketch, from a Windows desk
There is no honest Sketch clipboard on Windows. Options:
- Ask the Mac user to export SVG/PNG or to open the
.figin Sketch - Import
.sketchinto Figma (Figma has long supported Sketch import; supported object types have changed across versions — check current import notes) - Do not install unofficial Sketch-for-Windows ports for client work
Copying a screenshot of a Sketch file from a video call is a bitmap. Treat it as a reference, not a source.
Windows history is the wrong interchange bus
Microsoft’s list is 25 bitmaps and strings. A cross-tool team that “just copies” will:
- Lose vectors
- Blow the 4 MB cap on 2× PNGs
- Lose the stack at reboot
- Sync only text if someone enabled device sync — not the mock
Put interchange in files and links: Figma share link, export\ folder, DAM. Start-of-project staging. Brand assets.
Slack, Outlook, and tickets
Those destinations never wanted vectors.
- Slack: drop a PNG. Add files.
- Outlook: attach the PNG or PDF. Classic vs new Outlook paste options differ for surrounding text.
- Jira: Ctrl+V a bitmap into the description, or upload. Cloud UI has changed; if paste fails, attach. Atlassian.
A team rule that prevents arguments
Write this in the design-dev SOP:
- Source of truth is the Figma file (or the PSD, if the team is raster-first).
- Interchange format is SVG or PNG on disk, not “whatever Ctrl+C did.”
- XD and Sketch files are import projects, not daily paste sources.
- Win+V is for hex and URLs.
- Wipe pins at ship.

Optional shelf
A shelf that holds this week’s PNG/SVG exports is useful because the tools do not share a pasteboard. Edge-Drop is optional for dragging those exports into Figma, PS, or a browser mock. It will not translate an XD component into a Figma component. Nobody’s clipboard will.
Migration week, without heroics
If the team is leaving XD or Sketch:
- Inventory files. Who still has a Mac or an XD license?
- Export every active artboard to SVG/PNG this week, while the app still opens.
- Import into Figma. Rebuild components. Do not “paste and see.”
- Freeze XD/Sketch as read-only archives.
- Teach the SOP: source of truth is Figma; interchange is files.
A clipboard manager will not shorten that week. It will hide the fact that vectors died.
What to tell a Windows-only hire
“You will not run Sketch. You will not rely on XD paste. You will live in Figma desktop, export PNG/SVG, and Place files into Photoshop. Win+V is for hex and URLs. If someone sends a .sketch file, ask them for a Figma link or an SVG.”
That paragraph prevents a month of Slack threads.
Prototype links and components
None of the three tools put prototype wires on the Windows clipboard in a form the others understand. A copied XD artboard that “looks right” in Figma as a PNG has lost every flow. Budget rebuild time. Clipboard optimism is how migrations slip.
Components are the same. A nested XD component becomes flattened pixels or a pile of unnamed frames after a naive import. Rebuild. Then stop copying components as images. A component library is the opposite of a clipboard stack. Teach that in week one of a migration, not after the third flattened paste has already shipped to engineering as a “final” icon. Engineering will rasterize it again. Start from the file. The clipboard is a courier, not a design system, and Windows will not change that.
