Figma Desktop vs Figma Web: Why Does Paste Behave Differently?
By Khushi Yadav
Figma documents one set of copy commands. Windows users still lose hours because the desktop app and the browser tab are not the same clipboard citizen. The browser speaks the web clipboard API, with permission prompts and format limits that change by Chrome, Edge, and Figma version. The desktop app is a wrapped client with deeper native clipboard access — and its own bugs.
This guide is what Figma’s help says, what community reports still show in 2025–2026, and what Windows history will never fix.
What Figma officially documents (both surfaces)
Copy and paste objects applies to Figma Design on any plan.
Windows shortcuts from that article:
| Action | Windows shortcut | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Copy object | Ctrl+C | Figma object data (best inside Figma) |
| Paste | Ctrl+V | Object, or image-as-fill if the clipboard is a bitmap |
| Duplicate | Ctrl+D | In-file duplicate |
| Paste to replace | Ctrl+Shift+R | Replaces selection; adopts constraints |
| Paste over selection | Ctrl+Shift+V | On top of a selected frame, not inside |
| Copy as PNG | Ctrl+Shift+C | 2× PNG on the clipboard |
| Paste that PNG | Ctrl+Shift+V | Image paste of the PNG copy |
Additional official notes:
- Anyone with can view can copy; can edit can paste. File owners can restrict copy and sharing.
- Pasted objects try to keep x/y inside the destination frame; otherwise they center.
- Images and video are fills, not a special layer type. Paste on empty canvas → rectangle + fill.
- Assets larger than 4096 px on a side are resized; some metadata is lost.
- Most browsers do not copy animated GIFs to the clipboard. A browser copy of a GIF pastes into Figma as a still. Download and import instead.
- Copy assets between tools: prefer SVG. Marker and pattern elements may drop. Right-click > Copy/Paste as > Copy as SVG.
Figma also has cross-file / cross-device copy inside its own product. That is Figma’s transport, not Windows clipboard history.
Where desktop and web diverge
Figma’s help does not publish a full matrix of “desktop versus Chrome versus Edge.” The differences below are the ones that show up in practice and in Figma’s own forum. Treat them as version-sensitive. If a step fails, export a file.
1. Copy as PNG into other Windows apps
Officially, Copy as PNG puts a PNG on the system clipboard for Figma or other applications.
Forum threads in 2025 reported desktop showing “Copied as PNG” while Google Slides or other browser apps refused to paste, while the same frame copied in the web app pasted. Figma staff have not always reproduced it. That is the point: do not bet a critique on it.
Fallback: Export > PNG, then insert the file. Windows history may not show the PNG if it exceeds 4 MB.
2. Paste from Windows into Figma
Web Figma needs:
- Clipboard permission for the site (browser prompt)
- Focus on the canvas, not the address bar or a comment field
- A user gesture (Ctrl+V), not a background read
Desktop Figma usually reads the native clipboard without a site-permission prompt. It still needs canvas focus.
If web paste creates text of a file path instead of an image, the browser handed off text. Drop the file onto the canvas instead.
3. Copy from another native app
Illustrator → Figma vector paste has worked, broken, and worked again depending on Illustrator clipboard prefs (PDF/AICB) and Figma version. Figma users reported periods where only a flattened image arrived.
Reliable path: Copy as SVG from the source if it can emit SVG, or export SVG, or use Figma’s import. Illustrator clipboard handling.
Photoshop → Figma is almost always a bitmap. Export Clipboard must be on in PS for the system clipboard to receive the pixels. Then Figma pastes a fill. Place quality is better via exported PNG.
4. Local fonts
Web and desktop both need Figma’s font installer to see local Windows fonts. That is not paste, but it is why a pasted text layer looks “wrong” on the other surface. Access local fonts.
5. File drops versus clipboard
Both surfaces accept drag-and-drop of PNG, JPG, SVG, and (for import) .fig / some .sketch. Drop is often more reliable than paste on the web because it does not use the clipboard API.
Windows Win+V cannot drop a file it never stored.
What Windows history sees
| Figma action | Likely Win+V card |
|---|---|
| Ctrl+C on a frame | Often nothing useful (proprietary / large) |
| Copy as PNG, small | Bitmap, if ≤ 4 MB |
| Copy as SVG | Text (SVG markup) if it is small enough |
| Copy as CSS / iOS / Android | Text |
| Browser GIF copy | Still bitmap or nothing |
Unpinned cards die at restart. Do not archive frames in Win+V.
A working Windows setup
- Install the desktop app for daily design (fonts, fewer permission prompts).
- Keep one browser tab as the fallback for Copy as PNG into Google Slides / Docs if desktop paste fails that week.
- Enable Windows history for hex and URLs. Sync off.
- Memorize Ctrl+Shift+C (PNG) and Copy as SVG for leaving Figma.
- Memorize “deselect, then Ctrl+V” for incoming screenshots (new rectangle fill).
- If paste-to-replace misbehaves in the browser (users reported it applying paste-as-text in 2025), use the desktop app or replace via the layers panel.
How to Paste a Snip into Figma Without Quality Loss is the snip-specific path. Prefer Export at 2× over a 1× history thumbnail.
Slack and Outlook around Figma
Slack will accept a pasted PNG in the compose box; quality follows workspace settings. Prefer a drop of an exported PNG for critiques. Outlook embeds bitmaps; attach the export for stakeholders who will zoom.
Those apps do not understand Figma objects. Only PNG, SVG, or a share link survive the trip.
Optional shelf
A shelf that can drag a PNG or SVG into the Figma canvas avoids the desktop-versus-web clipboard argument entirely. Edge-Drop is optional for that drop path. It does not replace components, and it does not replace a share link when the interviewer is in another account.
Troubleshooting matrix
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Paste does nothing in web Figma | No clipboard permission or wrong focus | Allow clipboard for figma.com; click the canvas; Ctrl+V |
| Paste is text of a path | Browser handed off text | Drop the file |
| Copy as PNG works in Figma but not Slides | Desktop clipboard format mismatch | Export PNG or copy from web Figma |
| Paste to replace becomes text | Browser/version bug | Use desktop app or replace via layers |
| Incoming GIF is still | Browser clipboard | Download and import |
| Image looks soft | 4096 resize or 1× copy | Export 2×; use Copy as PNG |
| Win+V empty after a big frame copy | Over 4 MB or proprietary format | Expected; export a file |
| View-only user cannot paste | Permissions | Need can edit; owner may have restricted copy |
When in doubt, export. Clipboard is a convenience. The file is the product.
Comments, FigJam, and Dev Mode
Pasting into a comment is text. A PNG will not land there. FigJam accepts stickies and some images; treat it like a whiteboard, not a design file. Dev Mode copy is for CSS/inspect values — those are text cards, perfect for Win+V, useless as pixels.
Do not mix those surfaces when diagnosing “paste is broken.” State which surface had focus.
