How to Paste Into Affinity Photo and Designer on Windows
By Khushi Yadav
Affinity on Windows speaks two clipboard languages: its own objects (layers, curves, pixel selections) and whatever the OS last advertised. Serif's current help center documents Copying and pasting — including Paste Special on Windows desktop only, with formats that change based on what was copied — and New document from clipboard, described as a "paste as new document" path from another project or from copied or captured imagery.
Those two commands prevent most "it pasted as a tiny bitmap" surprises. Windows clipboard history does not. Win+V will keep a bitmap if it is under 4 MB. It will not keep an Affinity curve, a .afphoto slice, or a file. This note is the practical map.
Official Affinity paste commands
Treat the Edit menu as the source of truth. Do not invent Photoshop-only shortcuts inside Affinity.
Copy / Cut / Paste. Standard object or pixel-selection copy. Inside the same document or another Affinity document of the same persona, this often preserves native structure (a curve stays a curve). Across applications, Windows usually receives a bitmap and maybe SVG/HTML depending on what Affinity placed.
Duplicate (Ctrl+J). In-document copy. Use this when the goal is another object on the canvas, not a trip through the OS clipboard.
New from Clipboard (File menu; Windows users often use Ctrl+Alt+Shift+N if that shortcut is intact). Official help: start a new project from copied or captured imagery. Use it when the clipboard holds a screenshot or a flattened graphic and the next step is a document the same size as that graphic. A new document is the right container. Pasting a full-screen capture into an existing 64-pixel icon file is the wrong container.
Paste Special (Windows desktop only). Official help: paste using a choice of clipboard formats that appear dynamically from what is on the clipboard. This is the command that answers "did I just get pixels, SVG, or a device-independent bitmap?" When a paste looks wrong, open Paste Special before assuming Affinity is broken.
If Paste Special is missing, the build may be the web/iPad-style surface rather than the Windows desktop app. Official copy/paste help calls Paste Special out as Windows desktop only. Use the desktop app for OS-level format control.
Pixels versus a new document
| Goal | Command | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Peek at a snip at 1:1 | File > New from Clipboard | New document sized to the bitmap |
| Add the snip to an existing composition | Edit > Paste (or Paste Special → bitmap/PNG) | New pixel layer |
| Copy a curve to another Designer file | Copy in source, Paste in dest (Affinity-to-Affinity) | Prefer native objects; verify in Layers |
| Copy a curve to Figma / browser | Export SVG or PNG; do not trust Win+V | File drop or upload |
| Copy a curve to Photoshop | Export PNG/TIFF or SVG; test | Photoshop may rasterize |
Affinity-to-Affinity paste is the high-fidelity path. Affinity-to-everyone-else is an export path. That is the same honesty required of Photoshop and Figma. Best Clipboard Setup for Photoshop Users. Figma Desktop vs Figma Web: Paste Behavior Differs.
What Windows history actually keeps
Enable history with Win+V or Settings > System > Clipboard. Microsoft documents:
- 25 entries; older unpinned items fall off
- 4 MB per history item
- Formats: text, HTML, bitmap
- Unpinned history clears on restart; pins remain until deleted
A merged 4K layer from Affinity Photo is often larger than 4 MB as a DIB. It can still paste once with Ctrl+V as the live clipboard item and never appear in the history panel. Windows Clipboard 4 MB Cap: What Gets Dropped.
Files copied in Explorer are not history cards. Copying logo.afdesign in File Explorer copies a file list. Affinity will not "paste the document" from that list the way it pastes a bitmap. Open or Place the file.
Cloud clipboard sync, if turned on, is text across devices on the same Microsoft or work account. It will not sync an Affinity selection.
Transparency, color, and DPI traps
Alpha. Windows bitmap formats are inconsistent about transparency. A PNG file keeps alpha. A DIB paste into some hosts flattens onto white or black. If the next app must keep a cutout, Export > PNG (or the Affinity export persona / export options available in that version) and drop the file. How to Keep Transparent PNGs Transparent Through Paste.
Color. Affinity color-managed documents (ROMM RGB, Display P3, CMYK) will not look like the canvas when pasted into a browser or Discord. Convert or export to sRGB for screen mocks.
Document versus clipboard size. New from Clipboard uses the pixel size of the capture. A 200% view screenshot is not a 200% asset — it is a screenshot of a zoomed view. Export from the document at 1× and 2× instead. Exporting @1x and @2x Without Losing the Pair.
Designer-specific notes
Designer is a vector app. The Windows clipboard is a poor vector bus. SVG on the clipboard is possible in some hops and silently rasterized in others. Official Affinity help does not promise that every host will accept Affinity's vector clipboard flavor. The reliable handoff:
- Export SVG for Figma, a browser, or another vector tool that imports SVG
- Export PDF for print/layout tools
- Export PNG for anything that only understands pixels
Figma's own help treats pasted images as fills and Copy as PNG as a 2× bitmap. It does not claim to ingest Affinity-native curves from the OS clipboard. Export.
For brand marks, keep masters in the Affinity file or an SVG in the brand folder — not as pinned Win+V bitmaps. Keeping Brand Assets Off the Desktop and On a Shelf.
Photo-specific notes
Photo is the pixel persona. Marquee or brush a selection, Copy, then either:
- Paste into the same document as a new layer, or
- New from Clipboard if the selection should become its own file
If New from Clipboard reports that the clipboard contents cannot be used, the clipboard may hold a file list, empty data, or a format Affinity declined. Copy a known bitmap from Snipping Tool as a control test, then copy again from Affinity.
Place (File > Place) is the correct command for an existing PNG on disk. Paste is for what is already on the clipboard. Mixing them is how a 72-DPI screenshot replaces a 300-DPI product shot.
Canva, Blender, and other exits
Canva prefers an upload. A transparent PNG paste is a common failure. Canva Desktop vs Canva Web Clipboard Limits.
Blender wants a file on a Reference or Background empty. Blender and 3D Apps: Reference Images on the Side.
Print. Do not paste a flattened RGB bitmap into an email and call it press-ready. PDF/X from a layout app. Working With Print Shops: PDF First, Clipboard Never.
A small Windows setup for Affinity users
- Turn Clipboard history on for hex strings, SVG snippets under 4 MB, and small UI bitmaps.
- Leave Clipboard history across your devices off on client machines.
- Use New from Clipboard for snips that deserve their own document.
- Use Paste Special when the default paste rasterizes something that should stay vector inside Affinity-to-Affinity, or when the wrong format is winning.
- Export named files for every other app.
- Unpin and clear at the end of the job. Pins survive restart; they are still not a DAM.
A visual file shelf is optional after export, when the next click is a drop into Explorer or a browser. Edge-Drop can hold that named PNG. It cannot store Affinity-native curves as editable objects, and it does not replace New from Clipboard or Paste Special.
Affinity's Windows desktop help already named the two commands that matter. Use them. Treat Win+V as a 25-slot, 4 MB, bitmap-and-text scratch pad that forgets at reboot — useful, small, and honest.
Windows limits still apply inside Affinity
Enable history with Win+V if the session includes hex strings and small UI tiles. Leave Clipboard history across your devices off on a client laptop. Microsoft's documented cap is still 25 items, 4 MB, text / HTML / bitmap, and a restart wipe for unpinned clips. Affinity-native curves are not a history type. A 16-bit 4K flatten is usually over 4 MB as a DIB.
When a paste into Designer looks like a soft photograph of a logo, the OS offered pixels and Affinity accepted them. Paste Special is the official Windows desktop way to see the other advertised formats. If the list only shows a bitmap, export SVG or PDF. Do not hunt for a hidden Affinity setting that publishes editable curves to every host -- Serif's help does not promise that.
Place (File > Place) remains the correct command for an existing PNG on disk. New from Clipboard remains the correct command for a snip that deserves its own document. Mixing them is how a 72-DPI screenshot replaces a 300-DPI packshot. How to Copy an Image Instead of the File.
