How to Grab a Color Hex and Keep It
By Khushi Yadav
A hex code is a short string. Windows is good at strings. It is mediocre at images. Grab the color with a picker, copy text, then put that text somewhere that survives the next restart. Do not keep a screenshot of a color chip as the only record.
History, if enabled, will hold that string easily: it is text, well under 4 MB, and counts toward the 25 mixed items. Unpinned items still clear on restart. Pins remain until deleted. That is enough for a day, not enough for a design system.
Grab: PowerToys Color Picker
Microsoft Learn documents the steps:
- Install PowerToys and enable Color Picker.
- Press Win+Shift+C (default).
- Click the pixel. The default format HEX is copied.
- The editor stores up to 20 picked colors and can export them.
Change Default color format in PowerToys Settings if the project wants rgb() or another string. Custom formats use the documented tokens (%Re, %Gr, %Bl, and formatters). %ReX is red as two-digit uppercase hex.
Activation behavior is a setting: Open editor versus Pick a color first. Mouse buttons are also assignable. Defaults: left click picks and opens the editor, middle click picks and closes, right click cancels.
Scroll up to zoom. Microsoft’s tip for non-hover states: move near the control, zoom so the image freezes, then pick the rest state. That avoids sampling a hover highlight.
Limits Microsoft documents:
- No WCG/HDR support
- Shortcut will not fire into an elevated app unless PowerToys is elevated
- Overlay will not display above Start or Action Center, but picking can still work

Grab: browser DevTools
For a color that is already in CSS:
- F12 > select the element.
- Click the color swatch in the Styles pane.
- Copy the computed hex or
oklch()as the project requires.
This is more accurate than sampling a screenshot of the same button, which includes antialiasing and compression.
Edge and Chrome both expose the color in computed styles. Prefer the authored value when the stylesheet is the source of truth. Prefer the computed value when a preprocessor or cascade is in play. Write down which one was copied.
Grab: Snipping Tool Color picker
On Copilot+ / Windows 11 AI+ PCs, Snipping Tool includes a Color picker that copies a screen color to the clipboard. Microsoft’s Snipping Tool article marks this as SKU-limited. On other PCs, use PowerToys or ShareX.
The Snipping Tool picker is not a 20-color editor. It is a grab. Keep the result the same way: paste into tokens, or pin the text.
Grab: ShareX and design apps
ShareX lists Color picker and Screen color picker. Photoshop, Illustrator, and Figma eyedroppers copy or display values inside those apps. Copy as text when the value must leave the app.
Do not sample a Win+V thumbnail. History may have resized and flattened the bitmap. The hex will be wrong.
The drawing app’s own eyedropper is better when painting in that app’s color space. PowerToys samples the desktop as shown, including Night light. Disable Night light while matching brand color. Reference Images Beside the App You Are Drawing In.
Keep: choose a store that matches the lifespan
| Lifespan | Store | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Next paste only | Live clipboard | Replaced by the next Ctrl+C. |
| Rest of the day | Win+V | History must be on. Hex is text, well under 4 MB. Counts toward 25. Unpinned list dies at restart. |
| Rest of the week | Pin in Win+V | Survives restart until deleted. No names, no grouping. Fine for one brand color; bad for a palette. |
| The product | tokens.css, Tailwind config, Figma variables | The real home. |
| PowerToys session | Color Picker editor (20 colors) | Export if it matters. |
Enable history: Win+V > Turn on, or Settings > System > Clipboard. Leave Clipboard history across your devices off unless the hex must appear on another PC with the same Microsoft or work account. Sync is text, so a hex *will* upload if that toggle is on. That is usually unnecessary.

PowerToys export (right-click a history swatch > Export) is a file. Treat that file like tokens if the team does not have a repo yet. It is still not the product.
Keep: a tokens file in 30 seconds
After picking #0F172A:
- Open the project’s color file.
- Paste.
- Commit or save.
That beats pinning. Pins are sticky notes. Tokens are the product.
If the team lives in Figma, create or update a color variable. Do not paste a screenshot of the swatch into Slack as the specification.
Name the token (--color-surface, brand.primary). An unnamed #0F172A in Win+V will be meaningless in a month.
Format hygiene
- Decide on
#RRGGBBversusRRGGBBversus#rrggbb. PowerToys default is configurable. - Do not copy a screenshot of a hex printed in a PDF if the text is selectable.
- Watch for extra spaces or
HEX:prefixes some pickers add. PowerToys copies the format string as configured. - Alpha:
#RRGGBBAAis not the same as#RRGGBB. If the picker includes alpha, strip it when the destination is a 6-digit field. rgb(15, 23, 42)and#0F172Aare the same sRGB triple. Pick one house style.- Do not paste
oklch()into a tool that only accepts hex without converting.
Custom PowerToys formats can emit whatever the project wants, including hsl() or a C# Color constructor. That is still a string on the clipboard. History will store it as text. Confirm the copied string in Notepad once after changing the default format. A stray prefix is cheaper to catch there than in a merged CSS file.
What not to do
- Pin a full screenshot of the UI “so the color is in there.” History may drop the bitmap at 4 MB, and nobody can sample the thumbnail officially.
- Store customer-specific theme colors in a personal pin list on a shared PC.
- Trust an HDR desktop sample for a CSS token (PowerToys documents no HDR support).
- Sample a Slack or Discord embed of the brand PDF. Compression and a dark theme lie.
- Enable cloud clipboard sync “to back up the palette.” It will sync whatever text is copied, including passwords, and it will not become a swatch library.
Worked example: five tokens from a landing page
- Open the live page at 100% zoom on an SDR display. Night light off.
- Prefer DevTools for colors that exist in CSS. Use PowerToys only for raster bits (a hero photograph, a flattened logo).
- PowerToys-sample background, surface, primary, text, and border if DevTools is not enough.
- Paste into
tokens.cssas a list, names included. - Commit. Clear Win+V if the machine is shared.
Do not pin the five hexes and call the design system done. Pins disappear from attention even when they survive reboot.
When the hex disagrees with DevTools
Eyedropper samples rendered pixels (gamma, blending, subpixel). DevTools shows the authored CSS. For implementation, prefer DevTools. For matching a screenshot of a poster, prefer the eyedropper on the file opened at 100%, not a zoomed browser tab.
Antialiasing on text will sample a blend of foreground and background. Zoom so a solid pixel of the fill is under the cursor.
Write down which method was used. A one-digit disagreement in the last hex pair is often the difference between authored #0F172A and a blended neighbor.
Optional shelf
A shelf that detects hex in copied text can show a swatch. That is a convenience on top of text, not a picker. Edge-Drop is optional if visual staging of copied strings is useful. PowerToys plus a tokens file already completes the official path.
Do not use a shelf as the only palette. It is as unnamed as Win+V. If a swatch card is useful, still paste the same string into tokens.css before the day ends.
