How to Keep Reference Images Beside Your Drawing App

How to Keep Reference Images Beside Your Drawing App — Edge Drop Guide

Illustration and concept work need eyes on a reference while the pen is on the canvas. Win+V hides the canvas. A second monitor, an always-on-top viewer, or a hover shelf keeps the picture in peripheral vision. The clipboard can deliver the image once. It should not be the lightbox.

The job is visibility, not history

A lightbox has to:

  • Stay visible while Photoshop, Clip Studio, Krita, or Blender has focus
  • Show the image at a useful size, not a 120-pixel thumbnail
  • Survive the next Ctrl+C (a color, a mask, a line of notes)
  • Preferably survive a reboot mid-piece

Windows clipboard history fails all four as a primary tool. It is a modal panel, 25 mixed items, 4 MB per bitmap, unpinned wipe on restart. Opening it covers the drawing. History is off until enabled (Win+V > Turn on, or Settings > System > Clipboard), and even then it is a picker, not a pinboard.

Layout options

Second monitor (simplest when hardware exists)

  1. Collect references as files in refs\.
  2. Open them in Photos, a browser folder, or a dedicated viewer on the side screen.
  3. Draw on the main screen at full size.

No clipboard required after the files exist. Snipping Tool auto-save and Save image as fill the folder. Screenshot Folder vs Clipboard History for Designers.

Microsoft’s dual-monitor setup article is the hardware path: Settings > System > Display, identify, arrange. Put the refs on the physically closer screen if the tablet arm lives on that side.

Split one monitor

Windows Win+Left/Right snapping puts the viewer and the art app side by side. Fine for one reference. Poor for a stack. The art canvas shrinks; that is a real cost for tablet work.

Win+Z snap layouts can pin a narrow column. Use it for a single face ref, not for a mood board.

Always-on-top viewers

PureRef, Pureref-like boards, and some “pin image” tools float a collage above other windows. ShareX includes Pin to screen as an after-capture task and a tool. Microsoft’s Snipping Tool does not document a persistent pin-to-desktop collage.

ShareX Pin to screen is for one capture at a time unless multiple pins are created. PureRef is built for a pile of refs. Use the category that matches the pile size.

Always-on-top windows can sit under a fullscreen exclusive canvas. If the art app eats the display, leave windowed or borderless windowed, or move refs to a second display.

In-app reference panels

Clip Studio, Krita, and Photoshop (as placed layers or a second window via Window > Arrange) can hold a reference internally. That is often better color management than a random PNG viewer. Place Embedded in Photoshop keeps the file as a Smart Object. Do not flatten the ref into the painting layer.

Krita’s reference images tool and Clip Studio’s Sub View exist so the ref is in the same color pipeline as the painting. When color match matters, prefer those over a browser tab.

Adobe’s “add a picture as a layer” path is Place / Place Embedded. That is a file operation. It is not Ctrl+V of a Win+V thumbnail.

A hover shelf (optional)

When the need is “pull the last few copied images without losing the canvas,” an edge-triggered shelf can show cards on hover. Edge-Drop is one local hover shelf. It does not replace PureRef’s spatial board. It is a pull-tab for recent copies and files. Use it if the missing piece is drag-out, not layout. Drop Zones: Why the Edge of the Screen Matters.

Getting the image to the side without recopying

  1. Save or auto-save the reference as a file.
  2. Open or pin that file in the viewer.
  3. After that, stop using the clipboard for the *image*. Use the clipboard for color text and short notes.

If the only copy is a paste into a temporary Photoshop document, save that document or export the layer before the session continues. A crash plus an overwritten clipboard is a common way to lose the only scan of a paper sketch.

Large scans will not appear in Win+V. Paste them once into the viewer or Place them, then ignore history.

Microsoft’s Snipping Tool article covers Win+Shift+S, the editor, and auto-save. Turn auto-save on so a ref is a file even if the toast is dismissed. Win+Shift+S Not Saving What You Think It Saves.

Browser images: Save image as, not Copy image, when the ref must last the session. Copy image often puts HTML plus a bitmap on the clipboard; the next Ctrl+C of a hex evicts it. Web Images: Drag From Browser vs Copy vs Save As.

Color picking while drawing

Keep PowerToys Color Picker (Win+Shift+C) aimed at the reference window, not at a compressed Discord embed. Copy hex as text. The drawing app’s own eyedropper is better when painting in that app’s color space.

Microsoft Learn documents PowerToys Color Picker limits:

  • No WCG/HDR support
  • Shortcut will not fire into an elevated app unless PowerToys is elevated
  • Overlay will not display above Start or Action Center, but picking can still work

Do not sample a Win+V thumbnail. History may have flattened and resized the bitmap. The hex will be wrong.

Tablet and fullscreen quirks

  • Fullscreen art apps can block overlays. Leave a one-pixel gap or use a second display.
  • Win+V on a tablet is awkward one-handed. A folder on the second screen is easier than a shortcut chord. Using Win+V With One Hand on a Laptop.
  • Some apps run elevated and then refuse drops from a non-elevated Explorer or shelf. Paste still often works. Dragging Out of a Clipboard App Into an Elevated Window.
  • Pen buttons that send Win+Shift+S can flood history with accidental snips. Prefer auto-save plus the folder, and do not pin those accidents.

Worked example: portrait session on one monitor

  1. Put three face refs in refs\faces\.
  2. Open PureRef or Photos. Load the three files. Set always-on-top if the viewer supports it.
  3. Snap the viewer to the left 25% (Win+Left), Clip Studio to the rest.
  4. PowerToys samples skin hexes from the viewer, not from a Discord embed.
  5. After the session, close the viewer. The files remain. History can be cleared.

If PureRef is unavailable, Photoshop Window > Arrange > Two-up with a second document that only holds placed refs is enough.

Save the painting often. The refs being on disk does not save the canvas.

Lighting and color of the reference window

A viewer that applies night-light, HDR tone mapping, or a warm Night light filter will lie. Disable Night light on the reference display while matching color. Settings > System > Display > Night light. PowerToys cannot compensate for a filtered desktop (and does not support HDR).

Calibrate if the job is print. A cheap second monitor with a blue cast will train the painting toward that cast. The clipboard will not fix a lying display.

A small kit that works

ItemRole
refs\ folderSource of truth
Snipping Tool auto-saveFast layout grabs
PureRef or second Photos windowAlways visible
PowerToys Color PickerHex as text
Win+VSmall text only
Optional Edge-DropDrag last files without Explorer

That kit does not require a new capture app. ShareX is optional if pin-to-screen or scrolling capture is needed.

Leave Clipboard history across your devices off. A ref hex is text and *will* sync if that toggle is on. A ref bitmap will not become a photo roll.

FAQ

Does Win+V stay open on a second monitor as a lightbox? It is a modal history panel, not a pinboard. Close it and the light goes out. Use Photos or PureRef.

Can ShareX Pin to screen replace PureRef? For one or two images, yes. For a pile, PureRef is the category.

What about Blender’s empty image references? Those are file paths too. Save the ref, then load it in Blender. Clipboard paste is not the official 3D path.

Should refs be pinned in Win+V? No. Pins survive reboot but stay tiny, unnamed, and mixed with passwords and URLs. The folder has names.

Why this still matters in 2026

Drawing apps went fullscreen. Clipboard history stayed a modal panel with a 4 MB door. Illustrators who keep refs as files plus a side window lose nothing when Windows wipes unpinned history at restart. Those who Alt-Tab to Win+V lose the painting rhythm and the large scans. Put the picture beside the pen.
