PureRef or a Clipboard Shelf for Mood Boards?
By Khushi Yadav
Artists already have a tool for "keep the pictures in my face." PureRef is that tool. Its handbook (v2.1) describes a minimal, powerful digital reference and mood board: inspiration close at hand, out of the way. A Windows clipboard shelf is a different object. Microsoft's Win+V list is 25 items, 4 MB each, text / HTML / bitmap, unpinned items gone at restart. Those products overlap in the first five minutes of gathering and then diverge.
Use PureRef when the job is look. Use a clipboard when the job is the next paste. Use a DAM when the job is find this next year.
What PureRef is for
PureRef's own site and handbook position it as:
- A canvas for reference images and mood boards
- Packed with arrangement features (scale, crop, notes, always-on-top workflows artists already use)
- A place to stay in the painting or the 3D view while the refs sit beside it
The product is a scene of images. Save a .pur (PureRef's board file, as the app presents it) with the project if the board must reopen. That file is the mood board. It is not a brand DAM and it is not a Windows clipboard viewer.
Typical PureRef session:
- Drag files from
ref\or paste images the OS clipboard actually holds - Arrange by theme (materials, lighting, faces, UI)
- Keep the window always on top on the side monitor
- Paint, model, or write without Alt-Tabbing through Explorer
Blender and 3D Apps: Reference Images on the Side is the 3D companion: Blender still wants files on Reference empties for proportion; PureRef holds the look-dev dump.
What a clipboard shelf is for
Win+V (after history is enabled):
- Recovers the last 25 text / HTML / bitmap copies
- Pins a few that survive reboot
- Does not store Explorer files as cards
- Drops items over 4 MB
- Has no infinite canvas, no crop-in-place board, no always-on-top mood layout
A third-party shelf that shows recent clips and can drag files is closer to a staging tray: this hour's PNG, this hour's hex, this hour's export. It still is not a mood board. Optional example: Edge-Drop for hover-and-drag. It does not replace PureRef's canvas.
Honest split
| Need | Winner |
|---|---|
| 80 images visible at once, scaled and cropped | PureRef |
| Always-on-top while sculpting | PureRef |
| Save a board with the shot | PureRef .pur + ref\ files |
| Paste a hex or a URL five times today | Win+V |
| Drop a named PNG into Discord / Figma / Explorer | File shelf or Explorer |
| Search 8,000 assets by tag next year | Eagle / DAM / Lightroom — Eagle, Billfish, and Asset Managers vs Clip History |
| Press-ready pages | PDF — Working With Print Shops: PDF First, Clipboard Never |
| Product UI reuse | Figma components — When Figma Components Replace Copied Assets |
They pair well. Collect quickly onto the clipboard or a watch folder, dump onto the PureRef canvas, then save the useful stills as files in ref\. Do not leave the only copy inside an unsaved board or inside Win+V.
Capture hygiene
Browsers copy images as bitmaps or as HTML. PureRef can receive a paste. Figma's help notes that animated GIFs copied from most browsers become static. The same OS limitation hits PureRef and Win+V. Download the GIF if motion matters.
Huge 4K stills may paste into PureRef as files you dragged, but fail to enter Win+V because of the 4 MB cap. Drag the file. Why Your Huge Screenshot Never Appears in Win+V.
Client-secret boards: a PureRef canvas of an unreleased product is still a store of client UI. Treat it like the review folder. Client Feedback: Collect Marked-Up Shots in One Place. Clear Win+V after gathering so the same shots are not also in history.
Figma, Photoshop, Canva as sources
Figma. Export PNG or use Copy as PNG (officially 2×). Desktop versus web paste differs for the OS hop. Figma Desktop vs Figma Web: Paste Behavior Differs. For a mood board, export a set into ref\ and drag the folder into PureRef. That preserves names.
Photoshop. Export As / Quick Export, then drag files. Copy Merged is a bitmap peek. Best Clipboard Setup for Photoshop Users.
Canva. Download, then drag. Canva Desktop vs Canva Web Clipboard Limits.
Lightroom. Export JPEGs. Lightroom Copy is settings. Lightroom: When the Clipboard Is Useless.
When PureRef is the wrong upgrade
- The "board" is actually a brand kit that legal must control — use Libraries or a DAM
- The "board" is product components — use Figma
- The "board" is 4 photos from today's shoot to email — export four JPEGs
- The "board" is one hex and a logo — Win+V plus a brand folder is enough
PureRef shines at density of images in space. If the canvas is empty except for two logos, a folder icon would have been cheaper.
A combined artist setup on Windows
project/ref/is the file source of truth- PureRef board saved next to the scene or PSD
- Win+V on, sync off, for text and tiny UI
- Optional file shelf for drag-out of this session's exports
- Eagle or the studio DAM for the long tail
- End of project: archive
ref\and the.pur; clear clipboard; do not leave client faces in history
Keeping Brand Assets Off the Desktop and On a Shelf if logos keep landing on the wallpaper instead of in ref\.
Worked example: a materials board for a prop
- Download ten CC0 or licensed material photos into
prop/ref/materials/ - Drag the folder into PureRef; cluster leather, metal, paint
- Save
prop/ref/materials.pur - Copy two hex notes from a palette into Win+V
- Export any crop that must go into Substance or Photoshop as a file from the original, not from a screenshot of PureRef
- At delivery, archive
ref\+.pur. Clear history.
A screenshot of the PureRef window is a last-resort share. The board file plus the folder is the real share.
Troubleshooting
| Symptom | Fix |
|---|---|
| Board empty on another PC | The .pur referenced missing files; copy ref\ |
| GIF is still | Browser copy limitation; download the file |
| History has 25 random web images | Stop using Win+V as the collector; use PureRef + folder |
| Legal scare | Treat the board like client UI; wipe and archive |
PureRef wins the infinite canvas. A clipboard shelf wins the next 30 seconds. Claiming either one replaces the other is how artists end up with 25 unlabelled bitmaps and no board, or a gorgeous board and no way to drop a file into OBS. Use both, on purpose.
Windows limits next to PureRef
While gathering, it is tempting to copy twenty web images into Win+V and paste them into PureRef later. History will keep at most 25, drop anything over 4 MB, store only bitmaps (not the original file names), and wipe the unpinned set at restart. PureRef plus a ref folder keeps names and survives reboot.
If a reference must be dropped into Photoshop or Blender, drag the file from ref. A bitmap copied out of PureRef is a new raster. That is acceptable for a thumbnail and wrong for a texture that must match the licensed original.
Leave cloud clipboard sync off while collecting unreleased film stills or client products. Microsoft's sync is text, but the same Settings page is easy to flip on by accident.
Artists who already live in PureRef do not need a second mood board. They may still want a file tray for the three stills that must land in Blender, Substance, or OBS in the next hour. That tray is not PureRef and not Win+V. It is Explorer or an optional hover shelf. When the session ends, the .pur file and the ref folder are what get backed up. History can be emptied. If a director asks for "the board," send the .pur plus the folder, or export a flattened JPEG from PureRef if that is all they can open. Do not send twenty anonymous Win+V thumbnails and call it a package.
