Why Slack and Teams Images Look Blurry (and How to Fix It)

Images usually look blurry in Slack and Microsoft Teams for one of three reasons: you're looking at a scaled-down preview rather than the file, the image is a screenshot of something that was already small on screen, or it was pasted as a low-resolution clipboard snip instead of attached as the original export. To fix it, attach the original file (or share a link to it), and have recipients open or download that file rather than screenshotting what they see in the conversation.

Why images in chat look soft

1. You're looking at a preview. Chat apps fit images into the message column, so a large image is shown smaller than its real size. In Slack, an image only previews inline if it's under 25,000 pixels on its longest side and 45 million pixels in total. Opening the image or downloading the file shows it at its real size.

2. The image is a screenshot of a preview. If someone snips a chat bubble, a zoomed-out design canvas or a video player with Win+Shift+S, the capture holds only the screen pixels at that display size. No later step can restore detail that wasn't captured, and every re-share adds another lossy copy.

3. It was pasted, not attached. Pasting sends whatever is on the clipboard. If that's a snip, the message carries a snip. Attaching the exported file sends the export itself. Design tools vary here: Figma's Copy as PNG copies a 2x image, which pastes sharply, while copying from a viewer at reduced zoom doesn't.

How to send a sharp image in Slack

1. Export the image from the design tool at the size you want people to see.
2. Drag the file (up to ten at once) into the message field, or click + beside the message field and choose the file. Files can be up to 1 GB.
3. Add a description if you want alt text on the image.
4. Tell recipients to open the image or download it rather than screenshotting the conversation.

To get an image back out of Slack on desktop, find the file and click the download icon. For a message with several files, open the message's three-dots menu and choose Download [number] files. On mobile, tap the image, then the three-dots icon, then Save Image (iOS) or Download (Android).

Slack's help doesn't say whether it alters uploaded images, so treat the downloaded file as your best copy and check its pixel dimensions against the original. If you need several images to arrive exactly as exported, with their names, putting them in a .zip sends them as a single file attachment.

How to send a sharp image in Microsoft Teams

Teams stores files differently depending on where you share them:

• Files uploaded to a channel are stored in the team's SharePoint folder and appear in the channel's Shared tab.
• Files sent in a chat are stored in your OneDrive for Business, shared only with the people in that conversation, and appear in the chat's Shared tab.

So attach the exported file instead of pasting a snip into the message, and have recipients open it from the Shared tab. For large or many images, Microsoft's own advice for sending high-quality images is to save them to the cloud and share from OneDrive.

How to tell whether you have the original

Check the pixel dimensions of the file you downloaded and compare them with what the designer exported. If an image meant for a full-width slide is only a few hundred pixels wide, it's a preview or a screenshot, not the master. Ask for the export or the design file link instead of upscaling it.

File names help too. Names like image.png or Screenshot 2026-… usually mean a paste or snip; a named export such as hero-16x9-1920.png usually means a real file.

Putting chat images into slides

This is where blurriness usually becomes visible, on a projector. Insert the original file with Insert > Pictures > This Device rather than pasting from chat. Where the clipboard fits

Windows clipboard history (Win+V) keeps bitmaps up to 4 MB, without file names, and clears unpinned items when the PC restarts, so it's a short-term holding spot, not a source for finished images. FAQ

Does Slack compress images?

Slack's help doesn't document compressing uploaded files. What you see inline is a preview sized for the conversation, so open or download the file and check its dimensions if quality matters.

Why does a transparent PNG get a white or black background in chat?

Where do images I sent in a Teams chat end up?
