How to Stage 1:1, 4:5, and 16:9 Social Crops

How to Stage 1:1, 4:5, and 16:9 Social Crops — Edge Drop Guide

Social posts are the same idea cropped three ways. The industry set that still covers most feeds is 1:1 (square), 4:5 (portrait feed), and 16:9 (landscape / YouTube / many link previews). Networks change pixel suggestions often. The aspect set lasts longer than any one recommended width. The failure is recropping from a compressed preview because the three named files were never kept together.

Windows clipboard history will not keep a crop set. It holds 25 text / HTML / bitmap items under 4 MB, and unpinned items die at restart. Three 1080-wide PNGs may each miss history. Treat the set as three files in one folder, dropped into the scheduler in one sitting.

Confirm sizes from the network, not from memory

Pixel recommendations move. As of typical 2025–2026 public guidance from the networks (always re-check their current help):

  • Instagram feed often uses 4:5 portrait and 1:1; width commonly discussed around 1080 CSS pixels
  • Stories / Reels sit near 9:16
  • YouTube custom thumbnails are 1280×720 (16:9) in Google's official thumbnail help
  • LinkedIn / X / Facebook link cards vary; 1.91:1 and 16:9 appear in their docs at different times

This article uses 1:1, 4:5, 16:9 as the working triple plus 9:16 when stories are in scope. Before a campaign, open the network's current spec page and write the pixel sizes into the project README. Do not trust a 2019 cheat-sheet PNG in Win+V.

YouTube's official Create custom thumbnails article is a good example of a vendor number that should be copied as text (1280×720) rather than remembered as a vibe.

Design once, frame three times

Figma. Official components and constraints help: one image, three frames, constraints or a mask per frame. Export each frame as PNG from the Export panel. Export formats and settings covers scale. For social, 1× at the network's pixel size is usually enough; @2x is a product-UI habit. Exporting @1x and @2x Without Losing the Pair.

Name:

launch-hero-4x5-1080x1350.png

Photoshop. Artboards or three crops with Export As. Do not Copy Merged three times into chat. How to Move an Export From Photoshop to a Browser Mock. Best Clipboard Setup for Photoshop Users.

Canva. Resize / custom size per official Canva flows, then download each. Magic Resize is a starting point; verify pixels. Canva Desktop vs Canva Web Clipboard Limits.

Affinity. Export each artboard. Affinity Photo and Designer on Windows: Paste Notes.

Stage the triple, then drop once

  launch-hero-4x5-1080x1350.png
  launch-hero-16x9-1920x1080.png
  copy.txt

copy.txt holds captions and UTMs as text — that part is a good Win+V pin for the upload hour.

Upload sequence:

  1. Open the scheduler (native apps, Buffer, later.com, etc.)
  2. Drop the file that matches the placement
  3. Paste caption from copy.txt or history
  4. Do not screenshot the Figma frame into the uploader

A hover shelf that keeps the three files visible for drag-out matches this hour. Edge-Drop is optional. Explorer large icons in the social\ folder is enough if the set is only three files.

What not to do

  • Recrop from a Slack or Teams preview. Avoiding Compressed Chat Images in Final Decks
  • Use a 16:9 YouTube thumb as an Instagram portrait by letterboxing in the uploader if the brand cares about fill
  • Store only the 1:1 in history and "fix it in the app"
  • Mix 9:16 story files into the same unnamed desktop pile as the feed set
  • Treat a pasted bitmap as color-accurate. Export sRGB

Keeping Brand Assets Off the Desktop and On a Shelf for logos that appear on every crop. The logo lives in the brand folder; the crops live in the campaign folder.

Safe zones and UI chrome

Network UI covers hearts, usernames, and "sponsored" labels. Build safe margins in the frames (components help). A clipboard crop cannot remember a safe-zone overlay. Keep a Figma component or a Photoshop layer group called safe-4x5 and leave it on while designing, off while exporting if the overlay must not ship.

When Figma Components Replace Copied Assets if the team still copies last month's safe-zone PNG from history.

Motion and covers

A Reel needs a 9:16 video file plus a cover image. After Effects: Save Frame As or Copy Frame to Clipboard for a still review — Adobe documents Copy Frame to Clipboard as a PNG (and a bitmap on Windows) for pasting into chat. The cover that uploads should be Save Frame As > File or an export, not a recaptured Discord embed. Motion Designers: Still Frames and Loop GIFs.

QA before scheduling

CheckHow
AspectWidth/height ratio is exactly 1, 0.8, or 1.777…
PixelsMatch the README, not "about 1080"
File weightUnder the network's current MB cap
FacesNot under UI chrome in 4:5 and 9:16
LogoLegible at phone size
TextNot a screenshot of a caption; caption is in copy.txt

How to Hand Assets to a Developer Without Slack Soup if the "developer" is actually a marketing ops person who owns the CMS. Same rule: named files, one message with paths.

After the campaign

Archive social\ with the performance notes. Delete unpinned history so draft captions and unreleased product shots do not sit on a shared PC. The DAM (Eagle, Drive) can hold the hero for reuse; Win+V should not. Eagle, Billfish, and Asset Managers vs Clip History.

Worked example: a product-launch Tuesday

Monday afternoon:

  1. Confirm current Instagram feed recommendation on Meta's help (write pixels in README)
  2. Confirm YouTube thumb is still 1280×720
  3. Export the three feed/landscape files plus a 9:16 story if needed
  4. Legal reviews copy.txt

Tuesday morning:

  1. Open the native schedulers
  2. Drop launch-hero-4x5-1080x1350.png into the feed slot
  3. Drop 16:9 into YouTube Studio as a file
  4. Paste caption from the text file
  5. Do not open Slack to "grab the image from the announcement thread"

If a last-minute headline change happens, change type in Figma, re-export the three files, replace in the scheduler. Do not edit a downloaded Slack preview.

Troubleshooting

SymptomFix
Faces under the usernameSafe zone was off; fix frames, re-export
Soft on a phoneFile was a recapture; use the export
Wrong aspect accepted by the appThe app letterboxed; still replace with the right crop
History has one 1:1 onlyExpected if the others exceeded 4 MB; ignore history

Three named files and a caption text. That is the whole crop system. The clipboard may hold the caption. It may not hold the campaign.

Windows limits for a crop set

Three social PNGs are three files. They are not one clipboard object. Even if each is under 4 MB, three more copies that day will start evicting them from a 25-item list. A restart wipes the unpinned set before the scheduled slot.

Keep copy.txt as the only thing worth pinning. Drop files from the campaign folder. If the scheduler accepts drag-and-drop, a short visual shelf of those three files is optional. History is the wrong shelf.

Re-check each network's current pixel help before a big campaign. This article's 1:1 / 4:5 / 16:9 triple is a working set, not a forever spec. YouTube's 1280x720 thumbnail remains a documented file size, which is the point: vendor numbers live in vendor help, not in a pinned screenshot of a 2019 cheat sheet.

Safe-zone overlays belong in the design file as a component or a layer group, not as a fifth clipboard image. Turn the overlay off for export. If a paid ad unit uses a different ratio (1.91:1 link cards appear in some network docs), add a fourth named file rather than stretching the 16:9. Stretching is how logos kiss the crop. The campaign folder should make the intended placement obvious from the filename alone so a community manager can upload without opening Figma.
