Editors: Still Frames Between DaVinci Resolve, Slack, and Uploads

Editors: Still Frames Between DaVinci Resolve, Slack, and Uploads — Edge Drop Guide

Editors: still frames between DaVinci Resolve, Slack, and uploads is a file problem that people try to solve with Ctrl+C. A still you grabbed for a client Slack thread is not the same object as a still you will upload to Frame.io or a CMS. Prefer file drop. A clipboard bitmap is a preview. This is not NLE media management. Resolve’s media pool, bins, and cache still own the timeline. A hover shelf only holds the stills you are about to show someone.

Win+V: 25 items, 4 MB, text / HTML / bitmap. A 4K grab often never lands in history. Timeline files never do. Unpinned history clears on restart.

This guide does not walk Resolve version menus. Still-export command names move. The idea does not: export a file to disk, then stage the file. Game-engine sprites use the same file-versus-bitmap rule: stage sprites beside Unity or Unreal.

Microsoft’s browser Edge Drop was retired in Edge 152 (27 August 2026). Sending a still to a phone is LocalSend, Flitdrop, or the review app — not a clipboard overlay.

Numbered workflow: export still → shelf → drop → wipe

  1. Export a still to disk from Resolve, using whatever still-export command your current version exposes. PNG or JPEG in a dated folder client-notes\2026-10-14\. That file is the artifact. Do not treat “copy from viewer” as delivery.
  2. If your build puts a bitmap on the clipboard, save it immediately. 4 MB Win+V will drop a fat frame. Details on payloads: copying files vs copying file contents.
  3. Stage the files on a local shelf — hover or Alt+C in Edge Drop (Windows 10/11, Apache-2.0, local). Pin the timecode or marker note as text next to the PNG file. Mixed types: one shelf for screenshots, files, and text. Name files (sc04-tk2.png) so a 1 a.m. drop cannot attach the wrong take.
  4. Slack / Teams / Discord: drag the file onto the compose drop zone. Pasting a bitmap sometimes works and sometimes compresses twice. Named files are easier to find in the thread later.
  5. Upload forms (Frame.io, Vimeo review, a CMS, a YouTube thumbnail field): drag the file. If the page only offers a file picker, drop into Explorer first or into the picker window. Bitmaps that “paste” into a web rich-text field are the wrong container for a thumbnail spec.
  6. Capture of a player window that is not Resolve (browser dailies, a game engine): ShareX or Snipping Tool → save file → shelf. Pairing: Edge-Drop vs ShareX.
  7. When the round is done, clear unpinned cards. Do not leave unreleased frames on a laptop that goes to a cafe. Hide the shelf if you screen-share the editor desktop. Pause capture when you copy a client FTP password. Secrets. Streamers have a stricter on-camera list: keep a clipboard shelf without leaking it on-camera.

Leave Windows clipboard sync off. Review stills are not the text Microsoft documents for that toggle.

When Edge Drop fits / does not

Fits. Resolve holds the GPU. You still need three named PNGs and a timecode on the edge of the screen. You drag files into Slack or an upload field. You will not treat the shelf as a bin. You will wipe unreleased frames after the round.

Does not. You needed a media pool, relink, color management, or a render farm. You needed a DAM for weeks of producer / editor / colorist stills — use the review platform. You needed markers and comments in Resolve — those stay in the NLE. You needed to bounce the same PNG through Slack → download → shelf as a color proof. Slack compresses; use Frame.io or a folder for color. You needed audio WAVs on a clipboard. You needed a phone hop.

If the missing piece is “three named PNGs and a timecode on the edge of the screen while Resolve holds the GPU,” a local drag shelf is enough. edgedrop.app is free on Windows 10/11. Keep the media pool in Resolve.

What the shelf is not

  • Not a bin. Offline media, relink, and color management stay in Resolve.
  • Not a render farm.
  • Not a DAM.
  • Not Microsoft Edge Drop.

If you needed the still inside the timeline as a media clip, import the file. Pasting pixels into a Fusion comment is notes, not media.

Ditto is better for searching a sentence you copied from a script. The shelf is better when the mouse is already on the Resolve viewer and Slack is on the other monitor. Mouse-first: best clipboard setup if you prefer mouse over hotkeys.

Elevated / admin oddities: dragging from a shelf into a browser running at a different integrity level fails. Run both sides normal.

Resolve-shaped habits without version menus

Color: a still for a grade note should be an export that includes the viewer as you see it (timeline vs input vs output — your show’s convention). Do not argue LUT state over a compressed Slack bitmap if the producer will pixel-peep. Send the file.

Cut notes: “use this frame for the thumbnail” is a PNG file plus a text card with the TC. Paste TC as text; drop PNG as file.

Thumbnails: YouTube/Vimeo/CMS thumbnail slots are file inputs with aspect rules that live in that platform’s current help article. Export a still from Resolve at the timeline resolution, then (if needed) crop in a stills tool to a new file. Stage that file. Do not grab a bitmap of the entire Resolve UI — you will upload the inspector.

Audio-only days: you might still grab a still of a waveform for a producer who will not open the timeline. Export a viewer still as a file. A phone photo of the monitor is a third-generation copy; skip it.

Do not grab stills of a client’s unreleased face for a meme Slack. The shelf makes that easy; the contract does not. If the producer asks for a public-safe still, export from a version that already has the approved grade and graphics.

Round-trip with Slack: if the still is for color, use Frame.io or a folder, not the shelf → Slack → download → shelf loop. The shelf is for the first hop out of Resolve, not for bouncing the same PNG through three chat apps.

DaVinci Resolve is the NLE of record. Still export lives in the app, not on a clipboard.

Soft CTA

If the missing piece is “three named PNGs and a timecode on the edge of the screen while Resolve holds the GPU,” a local drag shelf is enough. edgedrop.app is free on Windows 10/11. Keep the media pool in Resolve.

FAQ

Can Win+V hold my 4K still? Often no. History caps items at 4 MB, stores text/HTML/bitmap only, and does not store timeline files.

Should I paste stills into Slack as bitmaps? Prefer dropping the exported file so the thread has a name and a download. Bitmap paste often compresses twice.

Does a clipboard shelf replace the media pool? No. It only stages stills you are about to send or upload. Import files when they belong on the timeline.

Which Resolve menu exports a still? This page will not name a version-specific menu. Export a still to disk with whatever command your build exposes, then stage that file.
