Where Should Motion Designers Keep Still Frames and GIFs?
By Khushi Yadav
Motion work has two outputs that people keep shoving through the same key: a still for review and a file for the timeline. Adobe now documents both in After Effects. Copy Frame to Clipboard grabs the currently rendered frame as a still for paste into chat or mail. Composition > Save Frame As > File (and Photoshop Layers) writes a still through the render queue. The Windows clipboard is the first tool. The render queue is the second. They are not interchangeable.
Microsoft's Win+V list will keep a bitmap if it is under 4 MB, among 25 items, until restart unless pinned. A 4K 16-bit frame will not join history. A 300-frame loop will never be a clipboard item.
After Effects: official still paths
Adobe's "Copy a frame to the clipboard" help (updated 2026) states:
- The command lives on the Composition, Layer, and Footage panels
- It copies the currently rendered frame
- After Effects copies the frame as a PNG on macOS and Windows, with support for up to 16-bit color
- On Windows, it also copies a bitmap for broader paste compatibility
- Use it to paste into chat, email, or other apps
That is a review pipe. Color management, compression, and the 4 MB history cap still apply once the bitmap hits Windows.
Adobe's "Render and export still images" help:
- Composition > Save Frame As > File — still through the Render Queue
- Composition > Save Frame As > Photoshop Layers — layered PSD
Use Save Frame As when the still is a thumbnail, key art, or Photoshop paint-over. Use Copy Frame when someone on Slack asked "this frame?" and the master will still be rendered later.
Premiere Pro
Premiere's export frame control (the camera icon on the Program Monitor, documented in Adobe Premiere help as Export Frame) writes a still to disk with a chosen format. That is the analog of Save Frame As. A Print Screen of the Program Monitor includes chrome and is the wrong color. Do not confuse Copy of a clip (a timeline object) with copying pixels.
What belongs on disk
| Deliverable | File | Not |
|---|---|---|
| Client review still | Save Frame As PNG/JPEG in stills\ | Only a Slack paste |
| YouTube thumb | 1280×720 file — Social Crop Sizes | A 16:9 snip of the viewer |
| Loop for chat / docs | Exported GIF or muted MP4 | A GIF copied from a browser (often static) |
| Timeline asset | Rendered ProRes / PNG sequence / WebM | A clipboard bitmap |
| Paint-over | PSD from Save Frame As > Photoshop Layers | Copy Merged from a screenshot |
Figma's paste help: most browsers do not copy animated GIFs; paste becomes a static image. Import the GIF file. The same OS limit hits Win+V.
Loop GIFs are files
A GIF that must loop in a spec or a Notion page should come from:
- AE / Photoshop Export / render settings for GIF, or
- A dedicated encoder (the studio's documented one)
Then upload the file. Do not Copy from a preview player. Avoiding Compressed Chat Images in Final Decks.
If the destination is a product UI, prefer MP4/WebM and a real motion spec. GIF is a compatibility dump.
Windows history during a review call
A useful Win+V load for a 30-minute AE review:
- Two Copy-Frame stills under 4 MB (maybe 1080-wide)
- A hex
- A frame-number note as text (
comp Logo_v12, 00:00:04:12)
Pin nothing that is unreleased if the laptop is shared. Clear after the call. Full-resolution 4K frames belong in stills\ even if they also pasted once.
Client Feedback: Collect Marked-Up Shots in One Place.
Color and HUD
Copy Frame's PNG/16-bit claim is Adobe's. Recipients (Slack, PowerPoint) may still display 8-bit sRGB. For a color-critical still, Save Frame As with the color settings the shop or brand specified, then send the file.
Game HUD and product UI pulled from a live comp should become named PNGs for the art repo, not a stack of anonymous bitmaps. Game UI Artists: HUD Icons on a Pull-Tab. Best Clipboard Setup for Photoshop Users when the still continues in Photoshop.
Figma and web
Motion designers often paste a still into Figma for a deck of states. Official Figma: images are fills; Copy as PNG is 2×; assets over 4096 px resize. Prefer export from AE then Place. Figma Desktop vs Figma Web: Paste Behavior Differs.
A review-to-final loop
- Playblast or RAM preview until the frame is right
- Copy Frame to Clipboard → paste to Slack with the timecode
- Save Frame As into
project/stills/v12-0412.pngif anyone marked it - Render the actual deliverable via Render Queue / Media Encoder
- Upload the render to the delivery folder
- Do not replace the render with a recaptured Slack still in the case study deck
A file shelf can hold the last few saved stills for drag into Slack or Explorer. Edge-Drop is optional. It cannot render a comp and it should not be the only place a 4K still lives.
Eagle, Billfish, and Asset Managers vs Clip History if the studio needs to search years of key art. Working With Print Shops: PDF First, Clipboard Never if the still becomes a poster — the poster is a PDF/TIFF, not a GIF.
Worked example: a 6-second logo sting
- Animate in AE
- Director asks about frame 72. Go there, Copy Frame to Clipboard, paste in Slack with
00:00:03:00 - They say "that one for the case study." Save Frame As > File →
sting-v4-0300.png - Render Queue: ProRes or the delivery codec to
renders/sting-v4.mov - Optional muted MP4/GIF for the Notion spec, exported, then uploaded
- Case-study deck: Insert
sting-v4-0300.png, not the Slack bubble - Clear unpinned history so frame 72 is not the only copy
Troubleshooting
| Symptom | Fix |
|---|---|
| Slack still looks posterized | Expected for a clipboard/PNG preview; the render is the master |
| Win+V missing the 4K frame | Over 4 MB; Save Frame As |
| GIF does not animate in Figma | Official: import the file |
| Premiere "copy" did not make a still | That copy was a clip object; use Export Frame |
Stills for talk. Files for time. Adobe split those commands on purpose. Keep the split.
Windows limits in the motion bay
Copy Frame to Clipboard is documented by Adobe as a PNG (and a Windows bitmap). Once it hits the OS, Microsoft's rules apply. A 4K 16-bit frame will often refuse Win+V because of the 4 MB cap. It may still paste once as the live clipboard item. The next copy destroys it. Save Frame As is the still that survives lunch.
Do not pin unreleased frames on a shared edit machine. Pins survive restart. Clear at the end of the review call. The render queue output in renders\ is the only object the client should ever be able to re-download.
Editors on Premiere should treat Export Frame the same way: disk first, chat second. A Program Monitor screenshot includes the UI chrome and a viewer LUT that is not the delivery color. If the still is key art, Save Frame As or Export Frame into stills\, then Place that file in Photoshop. After Effects Copy Frame is a courtesy to Slack, not a substitute for the render queue, Media Encoder, or a PNG sequence. Keep those jobs separate and reviews get faster, not slower.
Name stills with version and timecode (sting-v4-0300.png) so a later note "use the one from Slack" can be ignored. The filename is the review record. History is not.
