OBS Overlays and the Clipboard: Why It's a Weak Source

OBS Overlays and the Clipboard: Why It's a Weak Source — Edge Drop Guide

OBS Studio’s Image source is a path to a file. The official Knowledge Base lists Image File as the property that specifies the path on the computer. It supports .bmp, .tga, .png, .jpeg, .jpg, and .gif, with alpha where the format allows it. There is no official “paste clipboard” field.

A stream overlay that exists only as the last Windows copy will vanish the next time the scene reloads, the PC restarts, or someone copies a URL. Treat the clipboard as a way to *create* the file, never as the source OBS reads.

What OBS actually stores

When an Image source is added:

  1. Sources > + > Image.
  2. Name the source (alert-follow, starting-soon-logo).
  3. Browse to a file.
  4. Optionally enable Unload image when not showing to free memory. OBS documents a brief reload gap when that scene becomes visible again.

The scene collection remembers the path. If the file moves, the source breaks. If the file is overwritten in place (same name, new pixels), OBS can pick up the new bytes — useful for a “now playing” export, dangerous if a screenshot tool overwrites Screenshot (1).png.

Image Slide Show sources take a list of files or a directory. Still paths. Still not the clipboard.

Community feature requests exist for pasting a clipboard image into a scene. They are requests because the stock app does not do that job. Third-party scripts can write the clipboard to a temp file and point a source at it. That is still a file, with all the cleanup problems of temp paths.

Why the clipboard is a weak source

Windows live clipboard:

  • Holds one payload
  • Is replaced by the next copy
  • Does not survive a reboot as a reliable image archive

Windows history (Win+V):

  • 25 items
  • 4 MB each (full-frame overlays often miss the list)
  • Text, HTML, bitmap only
  • Unpinned items clear on restart
  • Does not store files as first-class cards

OBS needs the opposite: a stable path, preferably in the broadcast folder, with alpha intact.

A pasted bitmap into another app (Paint, Photoshop) can be saved as that file. That extra save is the whole workflow.

Correct overlay pipeline

  1. Design the overlay in Figma, Photoshop, or After Effects.
  2. Export PNG with transparency if the overlay sits on a camera. JPEG flattens alpha.
  3. Save under the OBS assets folder, for example C:\Broadcast\overlays\follow-alert.png.
  4. Point the Image source at that path once.
  5. To update art, export over the same filename or change the path deliberately.

For a last-minute meme or a guest name card:

  1. Win+Shift+S or ShareX capture.
  2. Confirm a PNG exists (Snipping Tool auto-save or ShareX Save image to file).
  3. If the image is only on the clipboard, paste into Paint and Save as PNG in the overlays folder. Do not leave it in Win+V.
  4. Browse or update the Image source.

Transparency notes: a screen snip of a transparent window is not a transparent PNG. It is a photograph of whatever was behind the window. Export from the design file. How to Keep Transparent PNGs Transparent Through Paste.

Stingers, alerts, and “I copied it from Twitter”

Social images arrive as compressed files or as HTML copies. Save them to disk, crop in an editor, then point OBS at the crop. Pasting into a browser-based overlay server may work until the tab reloads.

Browser sources in OBS load a URL. They do not load the Windows clipboard. If a browser overlay needs an image, that image is hosted or a local file:// path the browser source is allowed to read.

Color and HDR

Picking a hex for a source color filter is a text problem. Use PowerToys on the intended color, paste the hex into the filter or the design file. How to Grab a Color Hex and Keep It.

Do not expect a clipboard bitmap of an HDR game to match the SDR overlay pipeline. Convert in the design tool, export sRGB PNG.

ShareX pairing

ShareX after-capture Save image to file with a fixed folder (C:\Broadcast\captures\) plus Copy file path to clipboard is a strong live-ops combo: capture, path is on the clipboard, paste the path into a tool that accepts paths. Copy image to clipboard is for chat, not for OBS.

ShareX Pin to screen is a presenter aid. It is not an OBS source.

Optional shelf

A shelf can hold the last few export PNGs for drag into Explorer or a graphics app. It cannot be the Image source. Edge-Drop is optional staging. OBS still needs Browse.

If a drop into OBS’s preview is attempted, treat success as unofficial unless the installed OBS version documents it. The supported path is the Image source file picker.

Worked example: a last-minute sponsor logo

  1. The sponsor sends a Slack PNG. Download it; do not snip Slack.
  2. Open in Photoshop. Check alpha. Export C:\Broadcast\overlays\sponsor-aug.png.
  3. In OBS, Image source > Browse to that path.
  4. Hide the source when the read is over. Do not delete the file mid-stream.
  5. After the show, leave the file in place or replace it next month under a new name and update the path.

If the logo only lived on the clipboard, the first Ctrl+C of a chat message during stream would destroy it. OBS would have had nothing to reload after a crash.

Hotkeys versus files

OBS hotkeys show and hide sources. They do not paste. A stream deck button that “drops a meme” should swap an Image source path or toggle a source that already points at memes\current.png. A script can overwrite current.png from a watched folder. That is still a file.

Checklist before going live

  • Every Image source path exists on the machine that will stream
  • No source points at Pictures\Screenshots\Screenshot (184).png
  • Alpha overlays are PNG, not a snip
  • Guest names are files or text sources, not a clipboard leftover
  • Clipboard history is cleared of any keys or stream URLs (Clear clipboard data)

FAQ

Is there an official OBS paste shortcut? Not in the Image source documentation. Image File is a path.

Can a Browser Source load a clipboard image? No. It loads a URL or local page. Put the image on disk and reference it from that page.

What about GIF alerts? Image and Media sources take files. Clipboard GIFs are a poor live source. Save the GIF, browse to it.

Rehearsal

Before going live, restart OBS. Every Image source should reappear from disk. If a source is blank, the path moved. A clipboard-only workflow would be blank after every restart by definition. Fix paths, not paste.

Copy stream keys out of history after setup. They are text and fit Win+V all too well.

Closing checklist

  • OBS Image sources take a file path. There is no official clipboard field.
  • Export overlays as PNG with real alpha, not as snips of glass windows.
  • Keep assets under a broadcast folder with stable names.
  • After changing art, overwrite the same filename or update the path.
  • Restart OBS in rehearsal and confirm every source reloads from disk.
  • Clear stream keys from Win+V after setup. History loves text secrets.

Why this still matters in 2026

OBS Knowledge Base still describes Image sources as paths to .png and friends, with alpha when the file has it. Streamers who paste from the clipboard invent a source the app does not persist. A restart of OBS or of Windows proves it. Files under a broadcast folder remain the supported overlay pipeline.

One more habit

Keep a overlays\README.txt that lists every Image source path. After a disk migrate, fix the list first. Clipboard paste cannot rebuild a scene collection.
